The Miss Universe contestant from Indonesia, Nadine Chandrawinata, has strutted about in a bikini, to the displeasure of some.

Nadine Chandra Winata, the reigning Miss Indonesia, who was born in Germany but has some Indonesian parentage, appeared in a bikini at a Miss Universe 2006 photo shoot for their annual calendar, despite the fact that she could have chosen to wear a one-piece swimsuit.

Latifah Iskandar, a parliamentarian from the PAN party was one who let it be known that Indonesian girls should not engage in such activity:

I’m sad that there are still Indonesians like that, at this time wer’e concerned about the issue of pornography. It’s very inappropriate.
(Saya sedih masih ada orang Indonesia yang seperti itu, pada saat kita prihatin dengan pornografi. Ini sangat tidak patut)

The Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI, also complained, and went even further, saying that Indonesia should not participate in the contest at all.

The MUI rejects (Miss Universe) primarily because it emphasises beauty and the body. This can be seen in the appearance of the contestants. Secondly, the MUI rejects the clothes they wear.

said one Amidhan of the MUI in Jakarta and he added that a new fatwa was not in the offing because a previous one condemning public indecency and pornography was already sufficient. He advised that a new contest should be set up:

Why not have a contest that doesn’t emphasise beauty but instead ability, intelligence, and spirit as human beings who are moral and religiously observant?

Nadine however was not alone in her choice of the two-piece outfit. Miss Malaysia, Melissa Ann Tan, a girl of Chinese descent, also sported one. Of the 86 finalists who appeared in the swimsuit session only three chose to cover their belly buttons - Misses Serbia, Turks & Caicos and Kazakstan.

The womens’ wing of the Islamic Defenders Front, the Mujahidah FPI, have reported Nadine Chandrawinata to the police for indecency. FPI lawyer Adnan Assegaf, who accompanied Mujahidah Secretary Noni Supriyanti Budiani, gave the following explanation:

We have reported Nadine Chandrawinata as she has harassed Indonesian women by appearing in vulgar poses at the Miss Universe 2006 contest on behalf of Indonesia.

He added that Nadine’s participation in the event, which is being held in another country, the United States, was against Indonesian culture which, he claims, does not permit women to wear bikinis in public.

Besides Nadine, the FPI, who have been on a recent reporting-to-the-police-spree (see Krisdayanti & Playboy, Playboy the Third, Joanna Alexandra & Fla Priscilla, Andara Early), also reported some people connected with the Miss Indonesia contest and thought to be active supporters of Nadine, namely Mooryati Sudibyo, Wardiman Djojonegoro , Mega Angkasa , Kusuma Dewi and Artika Sari Devi, who the FPI says:

…have supported and financed the departure of Nadine. So they can be charged with engaging and participating in activities forbidden by the law.

The law in question is edict number 02/U/1984 which apparently forbids the holding of beauty contests where they conflict with the moral and religious standards of the people.

Noni Supryanti Budiani explained further:

We didn’t only report Nadine, it’s not fair if we just report her. Don’t allow Nadine to be used anymore.

About 100 Mujahidah loudly demonstrated outside the Jakarta police station where the complaint was filed.

Nadine says, to Antara, that she is unconcerned about the actions of the FPI back home in Indonesia.

It’s their right if they want to report me to the police. But one thing is for sure - my participation in the Miss Universe contest is to make Indonesia known in the international arena.

She says she is not at all depressed about the matter.

Alas, however, Nadine did not make the cut for the next round of twenty contestants, the news of which caused the dismay and almost visible pain of many in Indonesia, a country where the Miss Universe competition is taken rather seriously indeed and where the performance of the nation’s representative is viewed as a not insignificant matter of national pride.

A Look at Stage 4 Breast Cancer

Life saving early detection is the key to breast caner survival. Survival of Stage 4 breast cancer is significantly lower than if it is detected at earlier stages.

Breast cancer when it has advanced can spread to other tissue through out the body. This can include lung tissue, the liver, the brain and bone tissue. When breast cancer is first identified at Stage 4 it has inundated the body’s own ability to fight off the disease in order for it to have spread this far. According to the American Cancer Society when the disease is diagnosed this far advanced the 5 year survival rate may drop as much as sixteen to twenty percent.

The median survival for women who are diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer is about eighteen months after the time it is first diagnosed. According to the American Cancer Society women who survive five years after their diagnosis of advanced breast cancer can live an additional three and a half years beyond the median survival rate.

Probably due to lack of health insurance and poverty almost five percent of caucasian women in the United States have advanced breast cancer that has spread to other tissue at the time they are first diagnosed. For black women this number is nearly doubles to nine percent that are diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer.

It is important when women are diagnosed with this disease to get second and third opinions. New methods of treatment are being developed continually. Patients need to gain as much information as possible about new treatments for this disease. Stage 4 breast cancer is the most deadly class of the disease. Patients need to work closely with their health care providers for success in their treatments.

The most significant factor in breast cancer survival is having early detection. When the disease is detected while it is till limited to the breast at Stage 1 the survival chances are very high at ninety eight to one hundred percent. Survival rates drop to sixteen to twenty percent for metastasized breast cancer if it is first detected at Stage 4.

Women who are in good health beginning at the age of twenty years until forty years of age should have clinical breast exams performed once every three years by their health care providers. Regular self examinations should be done at the same time each month as an early detection practice. Breast exams should take place routinely each year after women reach forty years of age. This exam should include a mammogram or equivalent procedure.

However baring breasts is not such a big deal for a portion of Indonesians - especially youngsters, check a random internet cafe and walk through the 'my pictures' and 'my download' folders - there is still a big taboo on everything that is just slightly bare or sexy in one way or another. It is normal that people are dressed in any form when they hit the road, shoulders and knees generally covered as well. Of course not all live according to those unwritten rules; that would be pretty boring as well. Wearing tight-fitting clothing is seen as modern here as well and generally that doesn't cover up too much. Not many people seem to have a problem with that, even not with the holy month of fasting rapidly approaching.

Earlier the release of the book 'Jakarta Undercover - about the biggest sex-industry in Southeast Asia, Jakarta - caused pretty much of a stir here. The front all seems nice, pretty and obedient, but at the back side you will find the real Jakarta - but just as well any other place in Indonesia - which is much more free than people here are willing to see and show as the biggest Muslem country in the world.

It is not that strange that Djarum is experimenting with means of advertisement that are not allowed in Indonesia. However, is that really so? What exactly is the difference between a body painted lady with bare breasts and just some small piece of underwear over her ass and a better-dressed lady in tight pants and bright-orange tank top which fits her breasts the best? If you ask me, the Indonesian way of acting; that 'meek' but oh so superficial way, much more attractive than that simple 'European' way of advertising. Why does it all have to be that direct? Certain things can much better be brought in a more subtle way. Eventually the target is as clear as what; attracting men which will start smoking a pack of those clove-cigarettes a day.

In Hungaria they have different rules for etiquette than in Indonesia. That means that Djarum can do what they want with it as well. This makes it possible that an Indonesian company will look for ladies who are willing to bare their breasts and allow their nipples to be painted as a living advertisement. The first time that this happens in Indonesia - at least publicly - still has to come.

Obviously it is women that are used for this kind of actions. A majority of smokers still is male, so means of advertisement from the other gender are used to make it more attractive. In Europe they use as little cloth as possible. Straight to the target with two breasts in your face just to get you started with smoking. As a male I wouldn't even do any effort to look for more than just that direct style of advertising. Of course some people will say 'You are out of your mind', but like I said before it is much more attractive to have a decently dressed woman in front of you which is trying to sell you the same lethal stuff? They are able to repackage a pack of cigarettes as 'tasteful' and 'not really unhealthy' as well, so why can't they just do the same with the women?

It would be even better if Djarum was smart enough to put some of those properly dressed Indonesian women in a plane to Hungaria. That is much more of a good advertisement for Djarum and Indonesia than just those local women? Unfortunately not a single person working at Djarum seems to see that. Or maybe they changed plans when they had arrived in Europe and saw the new possibilities there? Still I think Indonesia has more than enough to offer for whatever Indonesian company that wants to advertise itself abroad. A little bit of nationalism - have an open mind about that - is not bad at all.

The neighborhood is starkly splendid. Luxury homes stand cheek by jowl in proud, pretentious rows. Identical double garage doors stare down identical concrete drives. They give the street an industrial flavor. Entry doors and upstairs windows feature variations on a single great-big-fancy-house theme. Each house has its own pool in a lofty screen-room at the back. Each has a newly installed lawn in front. There are no trees. The mailboxes all match. They wait, like uniformed prison guards, for mail that never comes for families who will never occupy the MacMansions of this eerie Orlando, Florida subdivision.

Nearly all the houses are empty. Tourists like us occupy a few. One in five is for sale. Walking the neighborhood our first night I think of the Stepford Wives. Blue alien eyes with glowing white pupils watch me and my clueless canine companion, Fluffy, from behind drawn curtains. Fluffy the guard poodle leaves a personal memento of his visit on one of the identical lawns. I consider retrieving it as I would in an inhabited neighborhood. But we are in an opulent wilderness. I leave it without guilt. Nobody lives here.

I’m visiting this strange land with my family, brothers, sisters, mom and kids. We’ve gathered in rented magnificence to see my baby sister for what will probably be the last time. She is here with her family through an act of kindness by a final-wish foundation. The foundation is paying for her trip from Utah.

My sister’s three children are the perfect age to enjoy the wholesome deceptions of Disneyworld. My sister is here to indulge her children in kindly illusion. She is here to bless the family she grew up in with her courage and grace for one last Christmas. My sister has no illusions. She is dying of cancer at age 40. She has fought it for many years with determination, fortitude, courage and irrepressible good humor. The fight is in the final rounds. She is way ahead on points but the knockout is inevitable.

What better place for gentle deceptions and dreams of happy endings than the city that sprung up like a forest of magic beanstalks around Disneyworld? We are here to amuse and fool her children and ours. We are here to confirm the truths that exist in fairy tales.

When we first see her she is walking around, smiling, tending the kids. Hey, wow, she’s not sick! She’s fine. She makes cancer jokes. She’s the same bright girl we’ve always known. She cracks wise about her disease like it’s a slimy stalker, a bumbling loser who can’t get over her and won’t leave her alone. He sends twisted love letters. He peeks in between the curtains at night. God, what a creep. Where is he, Meg? Just point him out. Uncle Brian and I will have a little talk with him. We’ll make sure he doesn’t bother you.

But we can’t get rid of him. He doesn’t show his face while we’re around. Megan looks fine. But she needs a lot of hardware to keep this guy away. Special gear. Special drugs. Needles. Lots and lots of pills. Pill bottles like lures in a tackle box. She has to sit down pretty soon. Pretty soon again she’s shivering. Too soon she has to go back to her room.

We don’t talk about the creep. We wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. We’re here in fantasyland to celebrate the eternal truths, not to glorify the bad guys. But in this fairy tale brothers can’t fight for the princess. Cinderella had help. Snow White had seven tough little guys looking out for her. The hunters who got such a bad rap in Bambi were heroes for Little Red Riding Hood. With a little help, fairy tale heroines all lived happily ever after. It doesn’t seem right. The creep makes a nuisance of himself. My sister is in the hospital half the time now.

My sister’s too weak to come along when aunts and uncles take the kids to World after World. We trudge from ride to ride like serial lovers wandering between bad romances. Each time the anticipation is long and painful, the act trying and ridiculous, the pleasure fleeting and unsatisfying. If Dante had visited a theme park the Inferno would have had a level known as Hell World. The kids seem to enjoy it. On the way home the game of 20 questions is hilarious. Nobody guessed Aaron, 10-year old Eli’s first grade pen pal from Connecticut. The goat joke brings down the house. I have to pull over. I’m laughing too hard to drive.

Home again the creep has his muddy boots on the sofa. He ignores our threats. Our sister is back in the hospital. We know the creep will be leaving soon with her worn out body. We can’t scare him off. That’s all he’ll get, though. Her kids, her courage, her laughs and her love stay here with us, happily ever after.

The nightspot Caesar Café in Sleman, Yogyakarta intends to hold a “Baywatch Party” this coming Saturday night while several Islamic organisations such as Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam (HMI) and the Gerakan Pemuda (GP) Ansor have condemned the plan.

HMI Sleman chairman Warijan says Baywatch parties must be rejected because they do not build up the national character and even damage it.

We ask the organising committee [of the Baywatch Party] to cancel the event.

Holding the event would only worsen the image of Yogyakarta in the country. Yogyakarta has until now been known as a city of education and culture, Warijan said, and went on that many parents were now becoming afraid to send their children to study in Yogyakarta because the the town was becoming a place of sin.

We don’t know about that “stays mainly in the plains” bit, but we’ll say with certainty that when it rains (in Spain) it pours—at least when it comes to artistic ventures. As bullfighting season draws to a close, the art scene is just revving up. Here are three main events to watch:

1. Thinking takes to the streets: For the first time ever August Rodin’s “The Thinker” has left its home in the Rodin Museum in Paris for an exhibition in the streets. The streets of Málaga and Granada, that is. On October 17, “The Thinker,” along with the six sculptures of the “Burghers of Calais” were unveiled Málaga’s old town. They’ll visit (under the watchful eyes of a 24 hour guard) until December 19; following their tenure in Málaga, they’ll grace the streets of Granada through January 27.

2. Cinema Paradiso: Film critics, mark your calendars! The Seville Film Festival opens on November 2 with The Lark Farm, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s World War I drama. The festival, which runs from November 2 until November 13, features only European films in its program of 150 titles from 30 countries.

3. Prado, Prado, Prado: There is much to be excited about at Madrid’s Prado Museum this fall. On October 31, Madrid’s majestic museum will unveil its new extension, and an exhibition of the museums best 19th-century works which have been in hiding for decade. As if that weren’t enough, in honor of its exciting news, the museum will be offering free admission on select dates and at select times.

July Air Stats: The Ryanair/SkyEurope Face-Off

In July, Ryanair filled their planes impressively, managing a load factor of 90%. This number is identical to the Irish low-cost carrier’s July 2006 load factor numbers. Even more impressive is Ryanair’s 21% increase in passengers carried in July of this year against July 2006 numbers. Clearly, this summer’s fare war helped to fill planes in July.

Earlier this year, SkyEurope had a clear advantage over Ryanair in these monthly face-offs. This advantage appears to have vaporized. While the Slovak low-cost carrier’s load factors are improving—July’s 87.6% load factor is up 3.4% over July 2006’s 84.2% load factor—they now lag behind Ryanair on this measure. And their percentage increase in passengers flown in July against July 2006 is also less impressive, at just 11.8%.

Also of note, yesterday’s FT reports that Ryanair has entered the race to control the Spanish low-cost market with all guns blazing. Shortly, we can expect an announcement that the airline will be setting up two additional bases in Alicante and Valencia.

1. Europe A La Carte Blog warns of delays at UK airports. Partially to blame: Spain’s new security rules for air passengers, which seem to us to flirt with violating the spirit of Schengen.

2. Italian somewhat low-cost carrier Volare is hawking a €10 discount on all July flights, if booked by July 2. Worth checking out.

3. UK travel gourmand site Black Tomato tell us about Yotel.com, a new airport-based pod-like accommodation featuring tiny cabin-like rooms with en suite showers. A Yotel is about to open at Gatwick’s South Terminal, where rates will begin at £25 for a four-hour stay in a “standard” cabin. The earliest date taken by the Yotel booking engine is July 1.

Festival Spain: Benicassim Rocks

Camping. Beaches. Some of the biggest acts music has to offer. What’s not to love? Now in its thirteenth year, the Benicássim International Music Festival has become arguably Spain’s biggest festival draw, serving up four days of bands and plenty of low-cost camping nearby. And Benacássim is a swell location, just north of Valencia and a few hours south of Barcelona.

This year the festival, which will be held July 19-22, will feature Iggy and the Stooges, Amy Winhouse, Kings of Leon, and Bright Eyes among its roughly 100 acts. While the €170 ticket for all four days might strike a few as a little high, the cost also includes nine days of camp site rental. Starting to sound like a Cheapo deal yet?

Spain: Costa del Sol Outpost

Sure, beach clubs abound on the Costa del Sol. Finding one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and that isn’t staffed with snobby waitstaff, however, can be quite a challenge. To find anything with a bit of raw character on the southern coast, it’s usually necessary to head west to the Costa del Luz, where towns like Tarifa welcome those looking for a more laid-back seaside experience.

This is why the Sonora club outside of Marbella was a such welcome discovery. Decked out with furniture and gear brought back from the owners’ annual jaunts to Bali and India, the club provides a decidedly relaxed alternative to the cookie-cutter chringuitoes (beach bars) that line the rest of the coast. Co-owned by a Spaniard who spent much of the past decade spinning tunes in Barcelona, Sonora will launch a series of evening weekend parties beginning later this month.

Weekend Recap Part Two: WSJ

In this weekend’s edition of the Wall Street Journal we eagerly lapped up Stan Sesser’s “The New Way To Do Europe.” Sesser’s lengthy service-oriented article is devoted to Europe’s “undiscovered gems”—cities and regions just off the tourist track that can be easily visited from London on budget airlines.

Sesser focuses his article on three cities Girona (Spain), Olbia (Italy), and Wroclaw (Poland—see above), providing transportation, accommodation, and dining suggestions for each. He also produces capsule coverage of an additional ten destinations: Balaton (Hungary), Bari (Italy), Bergamo (Italy), Bilbao (Spain), Carcassonne (France), les Iles d’Hyeres (France), Split (Croatia), Stavanger (Norway), Sylt (Germany), and Westport (Ireland). All lovely, though we wonder what Hamburg’s schicki-mickis might make of the idea that Sylt is in any way undiscovered territory.

While we would have loved to see Sesser go farther east, this type of round-up is exactly the sort of article that makes us happy. Stories like Sesser’s offer essential encouragment for Americans hurt hard by the weak greenback—not to mention budget-hungry travelers of all stripes.

Malaga: Mad for Picasso

While Malaga was the last of Picasso’s favored cities to receive an official Picasso museum—following Barcelona and Paris—the artist’s birthplace has wasted no time capitalizing on all things Pablo.

Banners strewn throughout town celebrate the legacy of the city’s favorite son. Other evidence of the time he spent there can be found in an assortment of products and one-of-a kind snapshots on the walls of cafes and bars.

From the official Pablo Picasso Museum, located at the eastern edge of the old town, one can take a short stroll north and find the artist’s family home, now a museum of family heirlooms and early sketches by Picasso. In the same square, the Picasso Foundation has opened a satellite gallery, showcasing a small permanent collection as well as traveling expositions.

Indonesian Sexy Girl

In the last couple of years there are lots of tv programme about make overs. The results are amazing. Ugly duckling turns to swan. Although sometimes the results are a little bit too much for my liking.

Don't get me wrong, most of the time I have no problem about people improving their body. If it makes you happy and you got the means, just do it. But I do have problem about extreme surgery. I have problem with the doctors feeding the obsession of their patients for the sake of money. Just look what happened to Michael Jackson. Hideous.

As I said, the results on the shows are amazing to say the least. Perfect eye sight, perfect teeth (well, you know how I love to see those pearly smiles), perfect body complete with a boob job. Seems like a boob job is a must-have surgery in those shows. The patients' confidence seems elevated, they seem happier and more comfortable with their bodies. Good for them.

Then they go home, and the show ends there.

In my daily live, I've seen orthognathic surgical patients all the time. In fact I've been one myself. So I know first hand how a surgery can affect your life. Most of the time I heard good stories. Better looking, higher confidence, happier, feels like being able to tackle anything. But there are also some bad ones. Like the one that can't handle that he looks more handsome now after the surgery and he ended up at the loony house. Or the more devastating one, where the patient ended up killing himself after the surgery. Granted those two cases are extreme cases and if I'm not mistaken they had some psychological problem to begin with. However, it shows that not all make over ends well.

The thing is, the orthognathic preparation before the surgery was longer than the preparation of those people on those shows had. Some of orthognathic patients need about two years of wearing braces, which also altered their appearance gradually. They and the people around them have time to adjust with the idea of having their face (slightly) altered after the surgery, unlike those on the make over shows. Sure, the producers of the shows would say that there are psychological assessment beforehand, and psychological sessions during the whole process. But is it enough?

I wonder once those lucky people of the shows got home, would their relationship getting better or worse? As one person changes so much (both physical and attitude) in such short period of time, who knows how the others would react. I guess in the beginning everyone is excited and happy. How does it goes in the longer term? Wouldn't you want to see how they are in, say, two years, maybe in another show? I sincerely hope that their relationship still works afterwards.

With summer in the horizon my thoughts often drift to my Hatteras hammock. All the relaxing activities that summer brings, spending lazy afternoons reading in my hammock is what I often look most forward to during the dreary days of spring.

My family spends several weekends at our lake home and in the midst of hustle and bustle of midday boating I tend to seek refuge by laying back reading under the shade of a tree in my hammock.

I was not always a hammock kind of girl. Since I did not have one growing up, my afternoons were spent on a blanket sprawled out on the ground. Often I would lie out a blanket and read in the shade, but from the first time I laid in a hammock I was hooked. Summer breezes surround you from the top and bottom of the hammock. When the wind blows you can feel the cool rush over you face and back by simply laying and swinging side to side.

Over the summer I will take countless naps on my hammock with my head rested on my pillow and book rising and falling on my chest.

Gone are the days of needing to find two trees to tie the hammock. Nowadays hammocks can be set up just about anywhere. Hatteras hammocks can be purchased completely packaged with a freestanding wooden stand so relaxing can happen just about anywhere. Hammocks can easily be set up on the grass under a tree or on a concrete pad below a second story deck.

Agnes Monica’s Coming of Age

A TV regular since grade school, Agnes Monica navigated the awkward teenage years to become entertainment’s hottest property. Now she is following her dream for the big time, and she believes. Bruce Emond reports.

It’s a muggy late summer day in New York City, and Simon Cowell is doing that little oral fixation thing with his pen, twisting and twirling it inside his notorious orifice of venom.

As Agnes Monica’s final wah-wah-wah-yeah-yeah-yeah fades out from an English-language rendition of her hit Bilang Saja Bila Kau Mau (Just Tell Me If You Want It), Cowell looks up and fixes her with his gaze. It’s clearly not one of his rare soft and soppy looks that he reserves for the chunky belter wearing her heart on her sleeve, or the quirky mop-headed cut-up who tweaks his funny bone.

“No, sunshine, I don’t want it. You are pretty, you can sing and dance a bit, and you may be good for Indochina or wherever you come from, but it just won’t cut it here. Now pack your bags and skedaddle on home.”

Of course, the above is merely a fancifully imagined, purely fictitious what-if encounter. If their paths do cross one day, whose to know if the hard-to-please Englishman would take a shine to Indonesia’s 20-year-old singing-dancing-acting phenom.

And even if he did not, it’s very doubtful that Agnes would nurse a crushed ego, shave her head in a Britney-esque meltdown and head straight to LaGuardia for the long flight home.

For she has that type of unshakeable, solid, almost prepotent belief in oneself that allows the possessor to take in stride whatever life throws at her. Of course, that brimming confidence, her dabbling in the latest trends from abroad and her success sets her up to be slapped down. She has dealt with the snipes of tabloid scribes about reported arrogance and an “attitude problem” (with them at least), and the put-downs about her singing and fashion sense (she is a prize target of the scathing fashion police at the website http://whodoyouthinkheare.blogspot.com) .

She will need that inner resolve and then some if she carries through this year with a long-held plan to embark on an international career by first testing the waters in the Big Apple.

“I have gone back and forth about it, about whether this is the right thing to do or not, but I think the time is right,” said Agnes, who plans to make the big move in June, for about two months at first.

Her mother, who has always been there from the very beginning of her career, will go to New York with her, but she was not immediately sold on the idea.

“We assume that people live freer lives there, but I told her, ‘If I wanted to do things like drugs and stuff, then I can do it right here, I don’t have to go abroad’.”

There are several big factors working in her favor: She is bright, ranking top of the class during most of her schooling and studying law at university. She speaks varying levels of English, Japanese and Mandarin and admits that she loves the process of knowledge gathering.

She is pretty in that pale, finely chiseled, delicate look of the heroines of popular Japanese comics and fashion magazines.

Apart from the looks and the brains, Agnes also has a big management team, headed by her older brother Steven, to carefully look out for her interests.

And she has strong faith, not only in herself, but from religion. As we talked during a break in shooting of her latest soap, a leather-bound Bible and several Christian motivational books were at her side among a stash of fashion magazines.

During the Indonesian Music Awards (AMI) last December, Agnes, dressed in an unusual frock that appeared to some to be channeling Marie Antoinette after a bad night at the Bastille, thanked Jesus Christ in her acceptance speech for best female pop performer, prompting aThank you, Dhani,” she icily responded.

She had cleaned up at 2006’s round of year-end awards shows, including being named MTV’s best female singer, to cement her place in the local entertainment industry.

“Awards have never been my main goal, that if I don’t get an award I will be sad and depressed. Awards are just a result of hard work. What is more important to me is my hard work, and doing it the right way instead of the wrong way.”

Still, all those trophies on the mantelpiece won’t make the leap to the international stage any easier: Only fellow Indonesian Anggun has succeeded before her, and she is still a bigger name in Europe than she is in the United States. Even Asian-American entertainers are few and far between in the U.S.

“I guess they will look at me as coming from Indonesia, thinking that it’s a third world country and wondering what I have to offer …Anggun did it, but she was at a different stage in her career, when she was younger and perhaps not as involved in as many things as I am.”

It’s a risk, but like everything in her career, it seems a calculated one; nothing fell into her lap. And she loves a challenge.

She started out as a toddler precociously aping TV announcers. Her parents put her into a talent school, where she studied acting and singing and dancing. She made her first album by the age of six.

“I only looked it as a hobby, but as I grew older, and became focused, I realized that this is my thing, I should focus on this.”

It was all about her choices, even back then, she adds.

“My parents were the motivators. My parents are the type who let their kids do their own thing, the important thing is that it’s the right way,” said Agnes, who is nine years younger than her only brother.

“Up to now, that is one of the advantages for me; that my parents support me 100 percent.”

She branched out into hosting children’s TV programs, and was chosen as the best kids’ program presenter in 1999. By then she was 13, at the awkward age when most child stars lose the charm factor as the ravages of puberty take over.

“Before I made that transition, we already realized that it would happen,” Agnes said about how her career was planned. “That was the most important thing. We knew there would be a problem; and at that time, only one person handled me, my mother. And she saw from the experience of others … mother had already thought about what needed to be done for my career; so I stopped doing children’s singing and went into soaps.

“That was my stepping-stone, so that people didn’t see me as a child star anymore, but as a soap actor, and then I went back to singing.”

In 2001, she starred in Pernikahan Dini, a TV adaptation of a controversial 1980s novel about teen pregnancy and early marriage. It was a different time, before today’s flood of teen-lit and TV spinoffs, and it was a potentially risky choice.

“Actually, I’ve always liked challenge,” she said. “When I feel that I am up against it, I am going to give it my best. It was even the case when I was small. I was a little nervous, because I was the lead, the story was a bit controversial and the rest of the cast were senior actors, but it [the insecurity] was only for a few days.”

It was a ratings success, leading to a slew of imitators. Then Agnes and team decided to return to music, debuting her first adult album, And the Story Goes … It included the suggestively titled, catchy Bilang Saja Bila Kau Mau, with an equally provocative video clip with an S+M undertone.

Child no more, a leather-clad Agnes taunted a man bound to a chair. A flirtation with the dark side, perhaps?

“I was 17 and I wanted to experiment,” she says of the video, later describing herself as “very religious but open-minded”. “That’s me. Maybe some day I want to be feminine, so I will be like that. But the next day I want to be a tomboy, and I will be like that.

“I don’t want to be that every day.”

In December, 2005, she released her second album, Whaddup A?!, with the hit single Bukan Milikmu (Not Yours), which brought her all the awards last year.

A measure of her popularity is her many commercials, from electronic goods to a motorcycle to body spray.

Agnes, who will be 21 on July 1, is a 15-year industry veteran; she has learned her lessons well, including from hostile run-ins with the powerful infotainment industry when she was a teenager. “I know how to be more diplomatic, how to handle the silly questions now.”

She also knows her detractors are waiting for her to fall on her pretty face – “I see jealousy as a sign of someone’s incapability,” she says – but that is not who she fears the most. Nobody’s perfect after all.

“I am most afraid of myself. I can face the outside threats, like people trying to bring me down. But I am afraid of being static, quiet, of being in my comfort zone. That is when you are vulnerable to ‘enemies’, and open to attack.”

Ultimately, though, it’s all about the big C.

“It comes from my mom, because she said if you don’t believe in yourself, then who will. Because 50 percent of the work is optimism …”

She refuses to categorize herself as a singer over an actress, or vice-versa, but prefers to call herself a “big dreamer”.

“One of the things I don’t like about being Asian is that if we have big dreams, then [others think] we are arrogant. I have a big dream to go international, and I have had it since I was a kid. And I told my mom and she was like, ‘yeah, OK, believe in your dreams’.

“Maybe some people are afraid of telling others of their dreams, because they are scared of being called arrogant, but I don’t care.”

It’s time for Agnes to get back to the set and the interview is done. Throughout the conversation, she has switched back and forth between Indonesian and English, the latter fully formed, fluent sentences, not the celebrity-speak of using the odd hackneyed English phrase.

As I replay the tape the next day, I realize something: Not once has she made a mistake in pronunciation, sentence structure or word choice. Agnes Monica is word perfect.
